Barcode scanners integrated with stock management systems
Parker Hannifin is one of those massive companies that few people have heard of. With annual sales of $12 billion, Parker Hannifin is a Fortune 250 global leader in motion and control technologies. For 100 years the company has engineered the success of its customers in a wide range of diversified industrial and aerospace markets.
The problem
For a number of years Parker Hannifin had used a legacy Windows Mobile application installed on hand-held barcode scanners which their operatives around the world used to integrate with their stock management EDI systems. As the Windows Mobile operating system was no longer supported and they were using an inefficient way to manually download CSVs of data from those scanners to import into their stock control EDI systems, they needed a better approach to use a modern mobile operating system and to automatically transfer the data to and from the scanners to their stock management systems.
The solution
I developed a bespoke Android app, web app and API so warehouse staff around the world can scan in and out Parker components to allow for just-in-time replenishment of items via modern handheld barcode scanners, all of which is integrated with their existing Oracle JD Edwards ERP systems.
Application and enrolment systems integrated with College MIS
Woodhouse College in Finchley, London, is one of top 3 sixth-form colleges in the country and is one of the leading places to study A levels in London. It is one of a small number of colleges with both Beacon Status and Ofsted Outstanding status.
The problem
Being one of UK's highest performing sixth-form colleges, they have particular validation requirements for applicants and so needed a bespoke online application system, developed precisely for their needs.
They also wished to have an integrated enrolment system so students who have received an offer based on their online application could then enter their GCSE results in August and confirm their A levels based on their actual GCSE grades.
To avoid lots of wasteful admin, they wished the enrolment system to then be able to integrate the confirmed enrolled students directly into their MIS systems.
The solution
I developed a web application that allowed applicants to apply online and to automatcially send reference requests to their school headteacher.
In August, when GCSE results are published, the applicants can then go through an online enrolment process which checks if their grades meet the A level requirements for their chosen A levels and have to ability to change their A levels based on their grades and the A level minimum requirements.
All students who meet their criteria and confirm their wish to enrol in September and then automatically added to the main college MIS systems ready for timetabling etc.
Smart card scanning & passenger management system
Custom passenger management and route scheduling platform for a coach company with 30 vehicles taking hundreds of students to a number of prestigious fee-paying schools in 30 vehicles Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Milton Keynes.
The problem
They wanted to modernise their systems both on board their coaches and in their back-office and asked New Media Aid to develop a system which allowed smart cards to be scanned on NFC card readers on their coaches (to avoid passengers having to be in contact with the driver during Covid) and this data to be synced with a new bespoke back-office system to manage all aspects of the business.
The solution
I developed a bespoke Android app and web app together with an API to link the two in order to provide a scalable, robust and secure solution.
The Android app sits in the driver's cab and is connected via Bluetooth to NFC card readers at the coach entrances (this alerts the driver if the scanned card is valid or not). The Android app syncs with the back-office systems to log all the card scans and also to a Parent Portal so parents of school bus passengers can see when their children have taken the bus to and from school.
Job management system with technician app and customer portal
Just Filters, a family-run supplier of commercial kitchen filter cleaning services in the UK for over 35 years, required a system to allow them to schedule their filter exchanges througout the UK and to allow their customers to be able to view the status of all filter exchanges via an online portal in order to meet their insurance obligations and environmental health requirements.
The problem
With big clients such as Compass, Fullers, Google, Black & Decker, Mercedes Benz, Panasonic & Royal Marsden Hospital (plus hundreds of small restaurants and pubs), Just Filters were finding it impossible to manage their growing business using a mixture of off-the-shelf systems, spreadsheets and WhatsApp and needed a bespoke system to organise jobs, automate repetitive tasks, and keep customers informed of scheduled visits and the results of those visits (e.g. proof of filter exchanges with clean filters).
The solution
I developed for them a secure bespoke web app which allowed them to schedule technician visits and also an Android app to allow the technicians to see and report on each job (exchange status, save photos, add comments, capture customer signature) and that these reports would appear instantly on a customer portal. Management could track the location of technicians via the location of their smartphones running the app.
They also required an e-commerce solution to allow customers to order and pay for bespoke or standard sized kitchen baffle filters so I developed an e-commerce system within their web app and CMS.
Job management, stock control and invoicing system
Telecommunication Engineers Management Services (TEMS) is a global supplier of high quality fibre products and engineering services including expert advice on communications infrastructure. They required a bespoke system to manage all parts of their diverse business to manage jobs, stock and issue invoices.
The problem
TEMS previously managed their business via a mixture of different systems and this involved lots of data entry duplication, hugh amounts of admin time and invariably human error.
The solution
I developed a bespoke web app with a secure back-end admin system and secure portals for customers, technicians and installers which met all the client's objectives.
I also developed a warehouse stock control system as a bespoke Android app running on a barcode scanner running the Android operating system. These barcode scanners integrate with the web app systems I also developed.
This bespoke system met the following objectives:
- Manage projects, assigning technicians, materials, costs and stages
- Store customer, supplier and contact details
- Schedule meetings and save and distribute meeting minutes
- Add/update materials and products needed for installations
- Check in and dispatch items from warehouse via a handheld scanner
- Manage company inventory (tooling, clothing, office hardware)
- Create and distribute purchase orders and invoices
- Have a central document store for all important company documents
- Allow customers and technicians to log and track issues
- Create and manage staff rotas
Job management, hire calculation and invoicing system
Alarms 4 Scaffolding, specialist scaffold alarm installers across London and the surrounding counties, needed a system to manage their scaffold alarms, site alarms, monitored scaffold alarms, battery powered scaffold lights and battery powered hoarding lights in and around London.
The problem
Alarms 4 Scaffolding previously managed their business via spreadsheets, WhatsApp and accounting software, with hugh amounts of admin time and data duplication. As the business grew this was no longer sustainable and no off-the-shelf systems could cater for their specific needs.
The solution
I developed a bespoke web app with a secure back-end admin system and secure portals for customers and installers which met all the client's objectives.
I also developed native Android and iOS apps so users could view all their alarm installations and be able to arm and disarm the alarms remotely, via the app (as well as via the web app customer portal).
This bespoke system met the following objectives:
- Manage projects, assigning technicians, materials, costs and stages
- Store customer, supplier and contact details
- Add/update materials and products needed for installations
- Create and distribute invoices and credit notes
- Automatically calculate extra hire fees for installations that have overrun the original contract period
