Earlier Project (delivered in the 2010s)

Leathermarket JMB—Southwark’s largest resident-managed housing organisation, responsible for over 1,500 homes between London Bridge and Tower Bridge—needed a modern way for maintenance officers to record estate issues, capture photos and submit reports while out on their rounds.

Their previous paper-based processes were slow, inefficient and difficult for management to track. The goal was to create an affordable, easy-to-use Android app paired with a secure management web application to streamline estate inspections and maintenance workflows.

Business Requirements

The organisation needed a digital system that would:

  • Provide maintenance officers with an Android app for estate patrols
  • List tasks and questions defined centrally by management
  • Capture photos and comments for each issue
  • Record signatures where required
  • Synchronise all submitted data instantly to a secure web portal
  • Allow managers to configure estates, patrols, questions and categories
  • Provide reporting tools showing submitted issues and photos in real time

Solution

New Media Aid developed a robust, low-cost solution consisting of:

  • A bespoke Android app used by maintenance operatives on-site
  • A secure .NET web application for administrators and managers
  • Real-time synchronisation between devices and server
  • Configurable questions, estates, patrols and task lists

The Android app was designed for simplicity, speed and offline capability—crucial for use around large housing estates with variable connectivity.

The Management Web App

The secure admin portal allowed management to:

  • Create estates, patrol routes and question sets
  • View submitted reports instantly
  • See photos, signatures and notes attached to each issue
  • Export reports for audit or review

Results

The transition from paper-based inspections to a mobile digital solution had a major impact. Maintenance operatives found the app intuitive and fast, reducing workload and eliminating paperwork. Management benefited from real-time visibility of issues across all estates.

Leathermarket JMB estimated that administrative time spent on reporting was reduced by approximately 80%, freeing staff to focus on resolving issues rather than documenting them.

The success of this project helped establish the foundation for later mobile reporting systems I built for other organisations, including facilities management, education and field services clients.
