Pricing & Typical Project Costs
No mystery, no “contact us for a quote” black box. Just a clear explanation of how I price projects and the kind of budgets most SMEs work with.
We’ve all heard the horror stories…
Eye-watering headlines about £10m intranets, public-sector websites that crash on launch, and “simple” systems that somehow eat three years and half a department’s budget.
That’s not how I work.
I specialise in practical, SME-sized projects — modernising legacy systems, building focused web apps and Android tools, and tuning SQL databases so staff can get their jobs done without waiting 30 seconds for every screen.
How I price projects
Every project is quoted on a fixed-price basis once we’ve agreed the scope. That means:
- You know the cost before any work starts
- No surprise invoices or “time and materials” drift
- Scope, deliverables and timelines are written down in plain English
Behind the scenes, I work from a sensible internal day rate, but what you see is a fixed cost, clear milestones and staged payments.
Typical project budgets
Every organisation is different, but to give you a feel for things, here are the ranges that most clients fall into.
Smaller fixes & rescue work
Ideal if you have a specific problem to solve rather than a whole new system.
- SQL performance review and tuning
- Fixing critical bugs in an existing .NET app
- Minor feature additions or UX clean-ups
Typical range: £450 – £2,000
Bespoke web & Android projects
Most of the bespoke web apps and Android projects I build for SMEs sit comfortably in this bracket.
- New bespoke .NET web applications
- Android apps for field engineers or inspectors
- Modernising an important legacy WebForms system
Typical range: £3,000 – £8,000
Final cost depends on complexity, integrations and how many moving parts are involved.
Larger or phased systems
For multi-phase systems, multi-site deployments or complex integrations, we typically break the work into stages.
- Multi-module web platforms
- Complex reporting and analytics layers
- AI-assisted search or document workflows
Typical starting point: £8,000+
Often delivered in phases so you can release value early and spread cost over time.
Ongoing changes, support & warranty
After go-live, I don’t disappear. For every project:
- Warranty: Any bugs not caught during testing are fixed free of charge for three months after go-live.
- Enhancements & change requests: Billed at my standard hourly rate of £45 per hour, with work sized and agreed in advance.
- Small ad-hoc jobs: Where possible, I’ll give a simple fixed price even for smaller pieces of work, so you know the cost upfront.
No “blank cheque” projects
I don’t take on vague, open-ended projects where nobody really knows what’s being built or how much it will cost. The aim is always:
- A clearly defined scope and set of deliverables
- Fixed-price proposals wherever possible
- Honest advice if something doesn’t need building at all
